Mrs. Dean and Miss Beyke's

5th Grade Web Page

March 14, 2008 – Holy Week

Congratulations to Academic Challenge Team A for TWO WINS!!!  We knew you could do it!  Good job to Academic Challenge Team B for their close match with St. Christopher.  Tuesday, both teams will have two matches at 4:00 and 4:30.  Please sign and return permission slips one last time.

Report cards are in the Friday folder.  Please sign and return as soon as possible.  One quarter left…let’s go out with a bang!

THIS WEEK:  Awards assembly is Monday at 1:00, and all are welcome to attend.  This Thursday is Holy Thursday, so we will be having a prayer service in place of liturgy at 8:15.  The 5th grade Sedar Meal will also be Holy Thursday, or Passover, right after lunch.  Good Friday is a half day with no lunch served.  The 8th graders will be presenting Mary’s Way of the Cross at 10:15 in the Church.

Mrs. Dean’s class needed kleenex’s last week, and now Miss Beyke does!  We just knew a few more boxes to get us through the school year.  If you did not bring your required boxes at the beginning, please do so now.  Thank you!

Thanks are also in order for the many families who donated food items to our annual canned food drive for Cathedral Soup Kitchen.  During March and April the Feinstein Foundation contributes 50 cents for each item so your donation makes a huge difference.

Challenger Center Update:  Parental chaperones have been contacted.  I wish I could take many parents, but they only allow me a certain number.  Miss Beyke’s class will attend their mission in the morning from 8:00 – 10:45, and Mrs. Dean’s class will attend from 11:15 – 2:00.  The students should still wear their uniforms this day.  Lunch will be served at school, so no need to make extra arrangements or send money.  A permission slip should be in your child’s Friday folder.  Please fill it out and return it Monday.

Class Work

Religion-  This week we will do a unit on Holy Week and portray a Jewish Seder Meal.  Thank you to the parents who have worked on this!

ReadingIn conjunction with our Mission to Mars, we will be reading The Green Book, a story of a girl and her family who are among the last refugees to flee a dying Earth in an old spaceship.  These books are property of the Challenger Center, so please encourage your child to take good care of them. J

Spelling- We will be doing an Easter unit.

Math- We may not do four full lessons in math this week due to the shortened week and the Challenger Center work.  I hope to touch on drawing conclusions, making predictions, prime and composite numbers, and prime factorization.  We will get more in-depth with factorization and factors after the Challenger Center mission.  Fractions are a big part of next year’s ISTEP, so please make sure your child is following along and understanding.

Science-  We are continuing our preparation for our journey to Mars.  I know last week’s newsletter said that I would send home a job application, but I took a side road to discuss the actual Challenger Mission with the students.  Monday, an application will be sent home.  Then, we will prepare for our jobs the rest of the week.

English-  We will continue to work with our writing.  It’s been a long process, but we’re beginning to be good editors.

Social Studies -  We will be learning about the Rights and Responsibilities that are guaranteed to all Americans under the Constitution.
