MRS. HANNON'S HAPPENINGS

Week of April, 2008

This N' That:

Welcome back!  We only have a few weeks of school remaining.  It will go quickly.  I'll do my best to keep your children grounded and focused.  Hopefully, warmer weather will arrive soon.

Our field trip to Clowes is on Wednesday.  We will eat lunch as soon as we return to school.  Students may have a hot lunch or sack lunch.  The cafeteria will hold lunch for those who want a hot lunch.

We have received the booklets for our final Indiana State Reading Assessment.  I may begin the assessment this week (probably Friday) and it will continue through next week at least.

Plans:

Religion: Most of this week will focus on our preparations for Mass this week.  We invite you to join us if you can.  Reading parts will come home today.  You may keep this copy at home to practice fluency, and we will go to church to practice during the week.

  Writing Workshop:  Continuing....

Reading: Our story is called Little Rabbit.  The book will come home on Wednesday for practice.

Phonics: Today we reviewed spelling with dge and ge, tch and ch.  We will also cover digraph ie and have an assessment on Thursday.  There will be no homework or new learning on Wednesday due to our field trip.

Spelling:  We had a pre-test this morning and the words should be coming home in folders today.  The test will be Friday.  I would like everyone to take the test on Friday, even if they passed the pre-test.  There will not be a contract this week, so start practicing tonight.  The words are:  how, round, dishes, blue, argue, diver, enjoy, overpay, afternoon, vacation, early, learn.  The sentences:  Braden found four spiders in the corner of the dark barn.  The soil there was moist and cool.  His cat wanted to sniff them.  He didn't want the spiders to bite his cat on the mouth.

Math: Identifying and counting quarters, a review of cold/cool and hot/warm, reading a thermometer to the nearest 10 degrees, subtracting half of a double (Example...6-3=3), assessment on Friday.

Social Studies:  We'll begin a new unit called Looking Back.  Our vocabulary words include:  change, season, history, technology, and hero.  I will be sending home directions for a project which will be due in a couple of weeks.  I would like each student to create a time line of his or her life.  I will provide plenty of details about this in the directions, which should come home by the end of the week.

Science: We will begin a unit on plants.  Vocabulary words include:  roots, stem, leaves, flowers, seed, seed coat, sunlight

Blessings,

Mrs. Hannon
