MRS. HANNON'S HAPPENINGS

Week of September 29, 2008

This N' That:

Wednesday, October 1, is a half day for students and a professional day for teachers.  We will have our normal schedule of specials (library) on Wednesday morning.  Our lunch period will be different (11:00-11:20) and there is no recess.  There is no extended day.  The dismissal schedule is as follows:  11:30 Brownsburg Bus/St. Malachy Bus, 11:35 South Walkers/Day Car, 11:40 Car Riders, 11:45 North Walkers

Our school pictures will be taken this Friday.  Some of you have already sent in your envelopes.  Thanks!  Please be sure to send an envelope for your order with your students.  Pictures are taken even if you don't place an order.  This is for our yearbook.

Plans:

Religion:  We will be moving through this week's chapter rather quickly and will use it as a review.  That is because we have already covered the content in different ways with our Creation theme.

Writing Workshop:  Continued personal narrative...we may not have a lot of time this week since I am finishing up the 2nd part of the Indiana Reading Assessment.  We completed the computer part last week, and have a booklet to complete this week, which includes areas of phonemic readiness, listening comprehension, and writing.  We may not have time for writing workshop at all.  We finally received some grammar workbooks which were late in arriving from MacMillan/McGraw-Hill (our basal reading series).  I'll go on directly to the grammar work which accompanies each week's reading theme, but I'll also be reinforcing some things we haven't delved into as deeply while waiting for these books to arrive (the company's fault, not the school's!).  The grammar work will be included in the Writing/English grade, not the reading grade.

Reading:  We are going to work together in small groups this week.  Our theme is about animals and animal babies.  We'll be working on a variety of skills, including reinforcing the short o sound, reviewing and practicing high frequency words, vocabulary, and finding the main idea and details.  The main selection is called Animal Moms and Dads.  The book will come home Wednesday to practice.  The small groups will also be practicing in other books surrounding this theme (leveled and phonetic) as well.  We will work in small groups some weeks and in whole group other weeks.

Phonics:  Spelling rule for k and c, letter Bb, assessment on Wednesday, and letter Mm.

Spelling:  Our test is on Wednesday.  The words are:  a, an, at, tap, lot, nap, tan, zip, lap, pit.  Sentences:  Nap on it.  Zip a top.

Math: Covering designs with pattern blocks (we did not get to this last week).  There is no homework on Monday.  Also, we'll practice ordering numbers to 20, adding 1, writing subtraction number sentences, counting backward from 10 to 1 (we have a fun song for this and I realize most children can already do this), and an assessment on Friday.

Social Studies: Science:  PBL continuing...my "green" newsletter is in the works.
