SIXTH GRADE HOME ROOM
September 16, 2008
Hello everyone,
We're definitely in full swing here in middle school. I think everyone is feeling comfortable.
Missing Assignments: One of the students updates the The others are to check it and make corrections if need be. BUT...everyone is already to have filled out assignments in each class so when they come back it is a double check. There are several students who are filling in their book at the end of the day. Help me in stressing the importance of writing everything down in each class. I gave each student a big paper clip to keep the page open so it would be easy.
ISTEP: Every student was present all three ISTEP days. YEAH!!!! That was a big help. We had fun with a different schedule, no homework and games at break time.
Multiplication Facts: It became evident today that some students need to brush up on their multiplication facts. The sixth grade has a math test Thursday that will cover 2 and 3 digit numbers x 2 and 3 digit numbers. They should know their facts at the snap of a finger. If not, here are a few things to do: Get out the flash cards. Put aside the ones you know immediately and work on the rest until there are none left. Get a deck of cards. Pull out ace through 10. Combine a few decks if you want. Play war. Whoever says the correct answer first, keeps the cards. Use 3-4 die. roll a number with each hand and multiply. They simply all MUST KNOW their facts. The sooner the better.
Gabriel Project: Debbie Timko came in last Thursday to talk to the sixth grade about the Gabriel project. We will be working with her for our service project. I sent a note home with items needed. We will be having a "Baby Shower", but don't have a date yet. If you have a lot of items or large items, you can bring them anytime. We will get them over to the office.
Magazines: Ms McFarland is collecting old magazines for our troops overseas. After you are finished enjoying them please send them in.
Cans for Cancer ResearchHaley and Lauren Ferguson are collecting aluminum cans to earn money for cancer research to honor their dad. From October 20-Oct. 31 cans will be collected in containers in the gym, by the office, and in the downstairs hallway by the Dia de los Muertos display.
Be looking for our 6th grade newsletter. I will probably only have religion on this page from now on or anything that just pertains to my homeroom so you don't get it twice. Then again if it is important I may remind you here.
RELIGION
NEW BIBLES: Thank you, thank you St Malachy PTO!! The PTO approved the purchase of 27 hardcover New American Bibles for my classroom. Your student can take his/her bible home to use for assignments. I suggested they keep it by their bed so they could pick it up and use it often.
All grades: Mrs. Wagoner will post the Tic Tac Toe assignment sheets on the bottom of this page. You will be able to check here to work on them at home.
Grade 6: Everyone did better on test 2 than on Chapter 1. They are getting used to studying instead of an open book test. I'm really happy with them. Their is a lot of great participation. Chapter 3 is called "Covenant and Commitment" and will focus on how we must be truthful, dependable, and committed to our faith in response to God's faithfulness. The test is scheduled for Monday, September 29th.
Grade 7: Would you help me encourage the students to study the details for the test. I have told them that their tests are harder because all the answers may seem correct. They have to study a little more for them. Chapter 3 is called "Jesus! Son of God, Son of Man". The focus will be the gift of conscience and how it helps us realize our goal of striving to be Christlike-of living as Jesus did. Chapter 3 test is down for Monday, September 29th.
Grade 8: Chapter 2 test is scheduled for Thursday, September 25th. They will be finished with testing on Wednesday and they finished the chapter on Monday the 15th. Plenty of time to study. Chapter 3 is called "Catholic: Open and Respectful of All". The word catholic means "universal" or "open to all". Catholics are called to welcome all people.
You can click on "kids" (6th) or "teens" (7th or 8th), click on units, grade level and quizzes or activities which go along with the chapters. You can take the quiz a couple times through to help study. It is really pretty helpful and may be a fun way to help study.
